Happiness IS your nature

Last time we explored the first step in our three-step recovery program: to remember that your feelings of upsetness, as well as your perceptions of an upsetting world, are caused by your own small idea of who you are.

You have been taught your whole life that you are a separate, incomplete, needy and vulnerable being,

And when you believe that you are needy and that you need the world to be a certain way for you to feel happy, then you will see everything ONLY relative to how it fills your needs. You’ll see everything in terms of “good” and “bad.” in terms of “happy” situations and “upsetting” ones—all according to whether the world seem to be meeting  your made-up rules and needs.

Untrue perceptions of the world

An untrue idea of yourself is always reflected as an untrue perception of the world. You’re not aware of yourself because of a false made-up idea of yourself. And that means that you’re not really seeing the world either. You’re seeing ONLY the shadows and reflections of your own IMAGINED needs. Remember the pickpocket and the saint.

So you may think that you saw a situation that upset you; you may think that someone else made you unhappy. But the real cause of your unhappiness and upsetness is your own UNTRUE belief that you needed the world to be a certain way before you could feel happy.

The next time you find yourself upset, these quotations from the Workbook of A Course in Miracles can help you come to your senses.

“I am never upset for the reason that I think.”  [WB 5] Remember that an intrinsic part of the process of making yourself upset is making up a false blame story — a story that blames your unhappiness on something outside yourself.

“I am upset because I see something that is not there.” [WB 6] I see a world that is making me unhappy. But nothing outside my own mind can block my awareness of my inner nature.

“I could feel peace instead of this.” [WB 34]  Any time I feel unpeace, it is ONLY because I have forgotten the peace-place in my mind. But I can ALWAYS go back to that place in any moment.]

And the next step is …

Once I remember the real cause of my upsetness, I can begin to undo that cause. That undoing is forgiveness, which is the second step of our three-step recovery program.
