Happiness as the key to life
John Lennon once said, “When I was five years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down “happy”. They told me that I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life.”
What is happiness?
Happiness is much more that just pleasure or a passing sense of feeling good or cheerfulness. Happiness is an all-inclusive sense of serenity and well-being that fills your awareness, and expands outward offering blessing and compassion and unconditional love to all.
At the deepest level, a happy mind and a peaceful mind and a loving mind are all one and the same. Peace, love and happiness refer to three aspects of the same state of being.
Everything else we want (money, relationships, etc.), we want for happiness. Happiness is always and ultimately what we really want—happiness for ourselves and for others. Everything we want for the sake of happiness.
And it turns out that happiness itself is the key to getting those other things. Happiness is the key to physical health, emotional healing, loving relationships, realizing your deepest dreams, and experiencing prosperity and well-being in every area of your life. And unhappiness is a state of mind that blocks and restricts them.
Also, happiness is your guide on your journey of spiritual awakening, and your signal that you are awakened. Happiness is the quality or feeling of living a fully awakened and realized life. This is what the mystics refer to as “perfect joy” or “absolute bliss”.
Happiness is the purpose and goal and motivation of everything we do, even those things we do for others.
Isn’t happiness selfish?
But isn’t happiness selfish?
No. True happiness is the very foundation of altruism. You cannot be truly loving and compassionate when you are upset and unhappy. Choosing to be peaceful and happy is not a selfish decision. It brings more light into everyone’s life. What you offer or share in any interaction is your own state of mind. (To be continued …)
